Appalachian State football player Jack Murphy passed away on April 26, as announced by head coach Shawn Clark in a social media post on Tuesday. The university released a statement expressing their condolences to the loved ones of the student-athlete who was a redshirt junior at the school.

The cause of death was not disclosed, but foul play is not suspected. Coach Clark took to social media to share his grief over the loss of Murphy, calling him a beloved Mountaineer and asking for thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

Murphy joined Appalachian State in 2023 after transferring from Marshall. He played as an offensive tackle and started all 14 games for the team during the season that saw Appalachian State finish second in the Sun Belt and win the Cure Bowl against Miami (Ohio).
