Consum’s Revenues Increase by 13% in 2023, with 75% Improvement in Results

Consum, a cooperative from Valencia, reported a turnover of 4,388.7 million euros last year, marking a 13.6% increase from the previous year. The company’s results grew by 75% to reach 101.1 million euros, attributed to cost containment efforts and significant savings on the energy bill, estimated at 40 million euros.

Consum’s general director, Antonio Rodríguez, shared these details in Valencia on Tuesday. Rodríguez emphasized that the profit growth was a result of the cooperative’s competitive efforts and successful energy cost savings. He highlighted the challenges posed by high inflation and increasing costs in the market but expressed confidence in maintaining competitive prices.

Consum saw a 10.2% increase in sales, ranking sixth in national distribution companies by area. The supermarket chain ended the year with 933 supermarkets, including both owned and franchise locations spread across six autonomous communities. The company employs 21,216 workers.

Rodríguez also mentioned the company’s focus on sustainability, citing their use of renewable energy sources and the installation of photovoltaic panels in supermarkets. He expressed optimism about the company’s performance in the face of inflation and market challenges.

In addition to its traditional brick-and-mortar stores, Consum invested heavily in online sales platforms last year, with plans for further expansion in 2024. The cooperative currently represents 1.7% of the market for online sales and plans to continue growing this segment through investments in innovation projects such as digital technologies.

Consum also prioritizes sourcing from national suppliers, with 80% of fresh food products being of national origin. This commitment to local sourcing is another way that Consum is working towards sustainability goals while also supporting local businesses and economies.

Overall, Consum’s success can be attributed to its focus on cost containment measures while also investing heavily in innovation projects such as digital technologies and renewable energy sources. With continued investment in these areas and a focus on sustainability goals
