Croatian Prime Minister’s Party Wins Legislative Elections Without Securing Majority

The conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic failed to secure a majority in the parliamentary elections held on Wednesday, despite being projected to win. According to exit polls, the HDZ is expected to win 58 seats, eight less than in the previous election, making it challenging for them to form a government. The Ríos de Justicia coalition, which includes the social democrat SDP, is in second place with 44 seats, also not enough for a majority.

In third place is the right-wing nationalist party Movimiento Patritico with 13 seats, whose support may be crucial in forming a government. Other parties that could play a role in government formation include the environmentalist Mozemo with 11 seats and the liberals of Most with 9 seats. The HDZ has struggled to find partners due to allegations of corruption and scandals during their time in power.

The campaign leading up to the elections was characterized by a heated exchange between Plenkovic and the current head of state, Zoran Milanovic. Milanovic, who is a social democrat turned Eurosceptic nationalist, challenged Plenkovic for the position of head of government. The campaign was turbulent, with both leaders exchanging accusations and criticisms.

During his campaign, Plenkovic emphasized stability, security, and development while addressing past corruption issues within his party. On the other hand, Milanovic pledged to form a government of national salvation and fight against corruption if elected. The outcome of these elections will determine Croatian politics’ future direction, particularly regarding EU alignment and economic policies.

Despite their initial lead in exit polls earlier this week showing they would have easily won an outright majority in Croatia’s parliamentary elections held on Wednesday
