The Future of Internet and Social Media Users: A Look at 2024

As of April 2024, the world’s population has reached 5.44 billion, with internet usage continuing to grow exponentially. Out of this total, 5.07 billion people are active social media users, making up a significant portion of the global population. With more than half of the world’s population connected to the internet, it continues to play a vital role in our modern information society.

In terms of internet penetration rates, Northern Europe leads the way, with countries like Norway and Saudi Arabia boasting a 99 percent rate. In contrast, North Korea has one of the lowest rates among its population. Asia has the highest number of internet users worldwide, with over 2.93 billion users followed closely by Europe’s approximately 750 million users. Countries such as China, India, and the United States lead in terms of sheer numbers of internet users.

While gender disparities exist in internet usage globally, young people aged 15-24 have higher rates across all regions. Europe has a remarkable penetration rate of 98 percent for this age group compared to a global average of 75 percent for this age group. However, income levels also play a significant role in internet access, with high-income countries having much higher rates compared to low-income markets (with only 26%).

Overall, as technology continues to advance and more people gain access to the internet, we can expect these trends to continue in the future.
