Meeting between Hamas and Fatah confirmed in Beijing by China

The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that representatives of the terrorist group Hamas and the Fatah movement recently met in Beijing to maintain an in-depth and sincere dialogue on Palestinian reconciliation. This meeting is a positive step towards achieving unity among the Palestinian people.

At a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that both sides expressed their political will to achieve reconciliation through dialogue and consultations and explored specific issues. The negotiations resulted in positive progress and an agreement to continue the dialogue process with the aim of realizing the unity of the Palestinian people as quickly as possible. Both sides also welcomed China’s support for the just cause of the Palestinian people and thanked China for its efforts to promote Palestinian unity.

China has previously shown interest in mediating conflicts in the region, such as facilitating an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations. Hamas and Fatah have been divided since 2007 when Hamas expelled Fatah from Gaza after winning elections there. However, recent reports suggest that these two factions are making progress towards reconciliation, which is supported by China’s diplomatic push to promote Palestinian unity.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently changed the government of the Palestinian National Authority as part of efforts to reform it and establish control in Gaza after the conflict ends. This ongoing mediation effort by China reflects a broader commitment to supporting Palestinians in achieving their rights under international law, including their right to self-determination and freedom from oppression.
