NieR Series Creator Claims Japanese Developers Struggle with Implementing Foreign Technology

During the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, Japanese developers faced challenges in keeping up with their Western counterparts, as stated by Yoko Taro, creator of the NieR series. According to him, Japanese developers struggle with incorporating technology from overseas due to various reasons. In a recent interview with IGN, Yoko Taro discussed game development with Hyung-Tae Kim, the creative director of Stellar Blade.

Yoko Taro highlighted the difficulties that Japanese developers face in implementing Western rendering systems, primarily because they are accustomed to creating their own engines. He noted that Japanese developers were slow to adopt rendering tools and middleware from the West and that many educational institutions do not teach these skills to new developers. As a result, Japanese developers often struggle to adapt technology from overseas while developers from China and South Korea are quicker to utilize engines like Unreal for games with Japanese aesthetics.

While some Japanese developers have faced difficulties with their proprietary engines such as Square Enix’s Luminous Engine, which was only used for two games before being abandoned, others have excelled. For instance, CAPCOM has developed the RE Engine, which powers a variety of games including multiple entries in the Resident Evil series, Monster Hunter Rise, Devil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6 and Dragon’s Dogma 2. With Unreal Engine 5 now setting a new standard for visual quality, it will be interesting to see if Japanese developers will embrace it for their future games or if they will continue to rely on proprietary engines to maintain high-quality standards.

In conclusion, Yoko Taro’s comments shed light on the challenges that Japanese game developers face when trying to keep up with their Western counterparts in terms of technology adoption. However, there are also examples of successful collaboration between Japanese and Western companies such as CAPCOM’s RE Engine development partnership with Epic Games.

As game development continues to evolve and become more globalized in nature, it is likely that we will see more opportunities for collaboration between different cultures and regions in the future. It is important for both Western and non-Western game developers to continue learning from each other in order to push boundaries and create innovative gaming experiences for players all around the world.

Overall, Japan has been a major player in video game industry but still faces some challenges when it comes to adapting technology from overseas. However, there are also examples of successful collaborations between Japanese companies and western ones like CAPCOM’s RE engine development partnership with Epic Games.
