National Small Business Week started on Sunday

The 2024 National Small Business Week kicks off on Sunday, celebrating the impact of small businesses on the United States economy for the past 58 years. Small businesses are identified by various factors such as firm revenues, total employment, and industry classification codes. Most manufacturing companies have fewer than 500 employees, while non-manufacturing companies with annual earnings less than $7.5 million qualify as small businesses.

President Biden has emphasized the importance of small businesses in a proclamation, calling them the driving force behind economic growth and the lifeblood of communities across America. National Small Business Week honors the hard work and dedication of entrepreneurs who strive to make their businesses and their country succeed.

In Bloomington, small businesses play a vital role in the local economy. Over 80% of the chamber member businesses are classified as small businesses. Christopher Emge, director of advocacy and public policy for the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, highlighted how these establishments contribute to the community’s economic ecosystem by circulating money back into it when customers spend at them.

To mark this occasion, the U.S Small Business Administration will host a virtual summit on April 30 and May 1. The event is free for both established and aspiring business owners and will feature sessions on starting a food truck business, developing essential skills for success, and networking opportunities.
