University Health begins construction on new clinic on the East Side

Recently, University Health has begun construction on a new medical complex in San Antonio. The Wheatley clinic, named after African American poet Phillis Wheatley, is a three-story, 60,000-square-foot facility that will open on the East Side near the Wheatley Sports Complex in early 2026. This location will provide primary care, urgent care, pharmacy services and serve as a secondary location for the University Hospital’s Institute for Public Health.

The expansion of this clinic was made possible through funding from the Bexar County Commissioners Court which allocated $40 million from the American Recovery Act Plan to support the project. The goal of this new location is to improve access to care by bringing advanced technologies, specialists and health education resources closer to home for many families in the area.

Another expansion project that took place was Vida clinic which broke ground in December 2023. George B. Hernandez Jr., president and CEO of University Health expressed his excitement about this new location and its potential to benefit the community. Precinct 4 County Commissioner Tommy Calvert praised the project for its dedication to improving the health of East Side community and thanked those involved in making it happen.

These expansion projects demonstrate University Health’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services to a growing population in San Antonio. These initiatives are aimed at increasing access to care and promoting overall wellness in the community.
