BHS Takes Home Gold in Scrambler Event at State Science Olympiad

The Michigan Science Olympiad took place at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo over the weekend. Despite tough competition, both the Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School teams held their own.

The Brighton High School Science Olympiad team excelled in one event, finishing first in the state. Their victory came in the Scrambler event, where teams had to build a small car that traveled a certain distance. The team’s coach, Shannan Pereira, expressed pride in her students’ hard work and determination.

Scranton Middle School also participated in the competition and earned two medals. They finished sixth in the Pentathlon, participating in a relay race with physical tasks and science questions. They also placed seventh in Dynamic Planets, a written test that covers topics like earthquakes and volcanoes. Pereira emphasized the dedication and effort of all the students involved, highlighting their hard work throughout the season.

Pereira has been coaching Science Olympiad at Brighton High School for nine years and at Scranton for four years. She commended both teams for their performance against the best teams in the state. She believes that Science Olympiad is an excellent way to encourage students to pursue careers in science and technology, as well as develop important skills like problem-solving and teamwork.
