Meuhedet and Leumit funds to own new hospital in Beersheba

The government has recently received recommendations from a special inter-ministerial commission regarding the format of the new hospital in Beersheba, which is set to begin operating in 2028. Originally, it was planned for the hospital to be owned by one of the health insurance funds and not managed by a government agency. However, in 2023, Moshe Bar-Simantov, Director General of the Ministry of Health, proposed that the construction and management of the hospital be transferred to the state. The Ministry of Finance strongly opposed this idea.

The inter-ministerial commission has now recommended that the new hospital be jointly owned by two small health insurance funds, Meuhedet and Leumit. Additionally, they suggested that the operational management of the hospital be carried out by the Sheba Medical Center. The new hospital will have a capacity of 600 beds and aims to reduce the load on Soroka Hospital while significantly improving access to medical care for those living in Negev region.

This decision marks a shift from the original plan to decentralize ownership and management in order to avoid conflicts of interest with the Ministry of Health. Ultimately, it reflects a commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services to residents across Israel’s diverse regions.
