Strategies for Managing Relationships Impacted by Mental Health Stigma – Houston Public Media

On Thursday, May 9, Emmy award-winning actor Joe Pantoliano, also known as “Joey Pants,” will be a guest on Houston Matters. He will be discussing his life and career, as well as his mental health journey. Pantoliano, who was diagnosed with clinical depression in 2008, founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the conversation around mental health.

Throughout the years, Houston Matters has explored various topics related to mental health. One recurring theme in these discussions is the issue of stigma. Despite increased awareness and openness about mental health challenges, stigma continues to be a significant barrier. Individuals who are open about their mental health struggles often face social and professional stigma.

In a recent conversation on Houston Matters, psychologists Dr. Michael Winters and Dr. Rheeda Walker discussed the pervasive nature of mental health stigma. They explored how stigma can vary from person to person and situation to situation, and what steps can be taken to combat it. Dr. Walker is the author of The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health, adding a unique perspective to the conversation.

As we continue our exploration of mental health issues in Houston Matters, it’s important to remember that everyone deserves access to quality care and support for their mental health concerns. We need to work together to break down the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help when they need it most.

Pantoliano’s nonprofit organization aims to change this narrative by promoting education and advocacy around mental health issues. His personal experience with depression has inspired him to use his platform for good by working towards creating a more accepting society for those struggling with mental illness.

We invite you all to join us on May 9th for this special episode of Houston Matters featuring Joe Pantoliano discussing his life and career while highlighting the importance of destigmatizing mental illnesses.
