Get a Mammogram: May is Women’s Health Month for Women Over 40

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shed light on health-related social needs as significant barriers that can negatively impact women’s health. Factors such as a lack of transportation, dissatisfaction with life, and the cost of care were found to be among the reasons why many women are not getting the recommended mammograms. Approximately 35% of women over the age of 50 are not up to date with their annual mammogram exams.

Dr. Joseph Sutcliffe, a radiologist at Baptist M&S Imaging Center North Central, emphasized that women often prioritize the health of others over their own. In Texas, insurance companies are required to cover the cost of mammograms without a co-pay, including for Medicare and Medicaid recipients. As Mother’s Day approaches, Sutcliffe encouraged men to advocate for all women over 40 to prioritize their health.

He stressed the importance of husbands, sons, and other male family members encouraging their loved ones to schedule their mammograms. By showing support and expressing their desire for the women in their lives to live long and healthy lives, men can play a vital role in motivating preventive health measures. Sutcliffe also highlighted that there are clinics and hospitals that offer payment plans for those without insurance and local nonprofits that provide assistance for various needs.

In conclusion, it is crucial for women to prioritize their health by scheduling regular mammogram exams. By addressing social barriers and seeking out available resources, women can take control of their health and well-being. Men can support the women in their lives by encouraging them to prioritize their health and avail themselves of the necessary preventive screenings.
