Bedford County Introduces Adaptive Sports Program for Children with Diverse Abilities

The Bedford County Adaptive Sports Program was established to ensure that no child is excluded from participating in sports because of their abilities. This program was conceived by A.J. Lacy, the Bedford County Parks and Recreation Athletic Coordinator. Eli Dudley, a six-year-old non-verbal child who uses a wheelchair, has benefited greatly from this program.

Eli’s father, Matt Dudley, emphasized how crucial it is for his son to have the opportunity to enjoy a typical childhood experience and simply have fun. Initially, the program had seven kids playing basketball before expanding to soccer. Currently, there are 25 kids playing baseball this spring. The team is called the Warriors and practices every Sunday under Coach Amanda Craig.

Coach Craig stated that the program revives the excitement of sports by focusing on having fun rather than competition. It provides children with a similar experience to playing outside with friends as children do. The program brings joy not only to Eli and other children like him but also to their families, including Eli’s father.

Seeing Eli on the t-ball field in his little uniform brought tears to Matt Dudley’s eyes as he witnessed the positive impact this program has had on his son and other children involved in it. The Bedford County Adaptive Sports Program has been making a significant difference in these children’s lives and those of their families, promoting inclusivity and positivity in sports for all abilities.
