Jermall Charlo’s middleweight title stripped by WBC

Jermall Charlo, a middleweight boxer with an unblemished record, was stripped of his title by the World Boxing Council (WBC) following his arrest for suspected drunken driving in Texas. Carlos Adames was appointed as the new champion in the division. Despite not defending his title since 2021, Adames had been the interim champion since October 2022.

The arrest happened in Pearland, a Houston suburb where police detained Charlo on three misdemeanor charges after they found his blood-alcohol content to be over twice the legal limit. According to a police report, Charlo struck another vehicle and fled from the police during the incident.

The WBC stated that they would continue to support Jermall Charlo during his challenging times, particularly regarding his mental wellness. After evaluating the facts and circumstances, the WBC may consider ranking Charlo in the super middleweight division.

Charlo’s most recent fight was a non-title bout in November where he achieved a unanimous-decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. With a record of 33-0 and 22 knockouts, Charlo’s boxing career has faced a setback due to his legal troubles.
