John Murphy to step aside from Bills play-by-play duties

Buffalo Bills radio announcer John Murphy has announced that he will be stepping away from his play-by-play duties for the upcoming 2024-25 season, as announced by the team on Thursday. However, he has indicated that he may still be involved in the game day broadcast in a different capacity moving forward.

In an interview with WBEN radio, Murphy expressed that he feels ready to start a new chapter in his life. This decision comes after dealing with the effects of a stroke that caused him to miss the end of the 2022 season and the entirety of the 2023 season. Chris Brown has taken over the play-by-play duties during his absence.

Over the past 35 years, Murphy has been a fixture on the Bills’ radio broadcast team. He spent 16 years as a color analyst from 1984-1989 and 1994-2003, before transitioning into the role of play-by-play announcer for the last 19 years from 2004 to 2022. His contributions to the Bills’ radio broadcast have been instrumental in keeping fans engaged and informed throughout the years.
