Biden pledges to halt US arms sales to Israel amid major operation in Rafah

On Wednesday, May 8, US President Joe Biden announced that the United States would no longer supply American ammunition to Israel if a large-scale operation were to begin in Rafah. In an interview with CNN, Biden acknowledged for the first time that weapons and ammunition provided to Israel are being used to target civilians in Gaza. Specifically, he referred to the use of 2,000-pound bombs in densely populated areas.

If Israel were to enter Rafah, Biden stated that he would withhold the weapons historically utilized for such operations, including powerful air bombs and artillery shells. The United States had already halted the transfer of significant air bombs to Israel, and this new statement extends to ammunition shells as well. Defensive weapons, such as those for the Iron Dome, will continue to be supplied to Israel.

It is important to note that this decision by President Biden has sparked controversy and debate among many individuals and organizations. Some argue that the cease in supply of weapons and ammunition could have negative consequences on Israeli security while others believe it is necessary due to human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.
