Biden Threatens to Halt Supply of Artillery Shells to Israel in Response to Rafah Invasion

On Wednesday, President Biden issued a stern warning that the US would not provide Israel with “artillery shells” and other weapons if they launched a major offensive against Rafah, a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip. Biden’s comments were a direct response to the recent shipment of bombs to Israel being halted due to concerns that the US ally was edging closer to an attack on Rafah despite warnings from the US government.

The US Government confirmed the suspension of the weapons shipment while assessing how to proceed in the Palestinian enclave of Rafah. In response, Gen. Lloyd Austin, Pentagon chief, stated that the US is reviewing short-term security assistance shipments to Israel. He emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and preventing major conflict in Rafah. The move was seen as a progressive step by some sectors of the Democratic Party who have been urging Biden to take action against Netanyahu in light of recent events.

However, Republican lawmakers disagreed with Biden’s decision and prompted a joint letter from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell questioning Biden’s commitment to Israel’s security. Despite criticism, the White House reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Israel’s security. Meanwhile, amidst all this controversy, it seems that there is still much work to be done in terms of resolving conflicts in Rafah and ensuring civilian safety in densely populated areas.

It is worth noting that during his interview with reporters on Wednesday, Biden also indicated that he was prepared to impose new sanctions on Iran if Tehran continued its nuclear program without making significant concessions at negotiations aimed at reaching a deal with world powers.

Overall, while President Biden has taken strong stance against any potential Israeli military operation against Rafah and emphasized civilian protection as paramount, his decision has sparked controversy among both Democrats and Republicans alike. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold in coming days and weeks but one thing is clear: efforts are needed from all parties involved to ensure peace and stability in Palestine.
