Why is it important to get a flu shot in the warmer months?

Vietnam, despite its tropical monsoon climate, experiences flu cases year-round with peaks in March-April and September-October. In contrast to the typical recommendation in countries like the US of getting flu shots in October, it is crucial to get vaccinated against the flu even during the hot weather in Vietnam. Studies show that flu vaccination can reduce the death rate by 70-80% and decrease hospitalizations and complications related to the flu.

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of serious complications if they get the flu, including birth defects, premature birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. To protect themselves and their newborns, pregnant women are recommended to get flu shots in the second or third trimester. Various types of influenza vaccines are available in Vietnam, including quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines to protect against different strains of the virus.

When flu symptoms appear, it’s important to take precautions such as avoiding crowded places, wearing a mask, and avoiding contact with high-risk individuals. Resting properly, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated can help the body recover from the illness more quickly. It is highly recommended to get a flu shot even during the hot weather in Vietnam to prevent illness and its complications.
