Campaigning with lie detectors: Right-wing populists take a hardline stance

In the midst of a highly anticipated election year in Romania, where four important polls are set to take place, the AUR party has announced its intention to subject its cadres to a polygraphic test. The party believes that conducting lie detector tests is crucial in winning the trust of citizens and ensuring the integrity of their candidates and local cadres.

AUR spokesperson Dan Tanasa described the integrity test as a way to create transparency for voters and establish the loyalty of party members. Party president George Simion emphasized the importance of team cohesion, stating that those who resist or display fear towards the polygraph test may not be trustworthy in times of need. Simion himself set an example by undergoing a lie detector test and sharing his results on social media.

However, experts have raised concerns about the validity of such a test, suggesting that a more comprehensive examination would be necessary. The provider of the lie detector is the same company that supplies equipment for a popular video blogger who conducts truth tests on prominent couples. This has led to questions about the authenticity and reliability of AUR’s actions.

Critics have also pointed out that AUR’s campaign timing coincides with recent internal disputes and controversies within the party. The party has faced accusations of serving Russian interests and undermining trust in Euro-Atlantic institutions despite its nationalist stance and commitment to Romanian values. Despite these challenges, AUR continues to push for greater transparency and accountability in politics.
