Three police officers injured during a SWAT intervention in the United States; wanted gunman shot dead

In the suburbs of New Orleans, Louisiana, an armed robber was taken into custody in Kenner after a major police operation. On Sunday morning, Kenner police received a call at 9:45 a.m. local time for shots fired in a residential area. Upon arrival, they found two men in a car with one wounded in the arm and the other in the stomach. The men were on their way to church when they were shot. The neighborhood where the incident took place appeared run down, with a railway line nearby and little signs of maintenance.

The police conducted a search and linked one of the houses to a family named Lathers. Matthew Lathers, 31, was suspected of seriously injuring a man during a burglary in the area. A warrant was issued, and a SWAT unit was called in to implement it. After hours of sporadic gunfire, Lathers eventually appeared at the front door armed with a rifle. He opened fire, injuring five people, including police officers. One of the injured officers was still hospitalized Sunday evening.
