Another Change for Broward County Public Schools: Superintendent Licata Resigns Amidst Leadership Struggles

In a Broward School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata announced his resignation due to health concerns. After discussing the matter with his family, including his wife and four adult children, Licata decided it was best to retire from his role as an educator after more than 30 years in South Florida. He thanked the community for their trust and support and expressed hope that Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), the sixth-largest school system in the nation and second-largest in Florida, would continue to thrive under new leadership.

Following Licata’s resignation, the Board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. This move came just over a year after former school Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright was removed due to her leadership style. Hepburn will take over BCPS on January 1st, marking the district’s third superintendent change in four years.

Licata had been leading BCPS since July of the previous year and had made significant strides during his tenure, including improving graduation rates and reducing disciplinary incidents. His departure marks yet another chapter in a tumultuous period for the district’s leadership. Stay tuned to WSVN.com and 7News for further updates on this ongoing story as BCPS begins its search for its fourth superintendent in four years.
