Washington accuses Russia of employing chemical weapons in the conflict with Ukraine

The United States has accused Russia of using chemical weapons in the war against Ukraine, according to an official statement from the State Department. The announcement came with new sanctions against Russia, which included more than 200 individuals and 80 companies and individuals for their alleged violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The report stated that Russia used the substance chloropicrin against Ukrainian military forces. Chloropicrin is listed as a prohibited substance by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and can cause irritation and suffocation in high concentrations, although it is not a neuroparalytic poison. It was previously used during World War I.

There has been no response from Moscow regarding this accusation. Earlier, the Ukrainian military had reported the use of chemical substances by Russian troops on the battlefield, although there were no casualties as a result. These allegations continue to be a contentious issue in the ongoing conflict.
