ECU Health Meets with Thomas Construction at Upcoming Behavioral Health Hospital Site to Address Mental Health Needs

Mental health issues are a growing concern in the construction industry, with high rates of suicide among workers. It is crucial to address this issue in the workplace, and Thomas Construction took an important step by hosting a discussion on mental health. The event provided breakfast, t-shirts, and mental health resources to the team, with Chris Thorn playing a key role in organizing it.

Thorn emphasized the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and creating a positive work environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns. He highlighted the need for access to necessary resources and trained crisis counselors for individuals experiencing mental health-related distress.

Simpson echoed Thorn’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of normalizing discussions around mental health and reducing stigma associated with mental illness and substance use disorders. The promotion of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at the event was an important part of providing access to trained professionals who offer 24/7 support to those experiencing distress.

The lifeline connects callers with resources specific to their state, including free and confidential assistance in North Carolina. Educating individuals about mental health resources and encouraging open conversations can help improve outcomes and support those in need.
