Elderly woman attempts to pay online scammer by robbing bank

An elderly woman from Ohio, Ann Mayers, has been arrested for robbing a bank in Fairfield Township. At the age of 74 and with no criminal history, Mayers walked into an AurGroup Credit Union office on April 19 and demanded money while brandishing a gun. She left with only $500 stolen and was quickly tracked down by police at her home a few kilometers away.

Upon her arrest, Mayers confessed to the robbery. However, it turns out that she may have fallen victim to online scams herself. Her family revealed that she had sent money to an unidentified person before the robbery, despite potentially being a victim. Despite this, Mayers chose to solve her problem by committing a crime. Her family members were aware of her plan but did not take her intention seriously.

Mayers is currently being held in Butler County Jail in Ohio and is seeking a pro bono lawyer due to her inability to afford one. It is unclear how Mayers fell victim to the online scammer, but she had borrowed thousands of dollars from friends and family to pay them back. The police have not found evidence of the fraud yet. Mayers hopes that by sharing her story, others can be warned about the dangers of falling prey to online scams and the consequences of committing a crime.
