Wisconsin Now” Tackles Gun Violence as Public Health Crisis, Milwaukee Resurrects Obama Program for Young Men of Color, and Hayward Community Clears Floating Bog with Careful Precision.

In the latest episode of “Wisconsin Now,” two doctors from the state discuss the impact of gun violence on public health. This comes after the surgeon general declared gun violence a public health crisis for Americans last month. The doctors provide insights into how gun violence affects the overall well-being of society.

Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, the African American Leadership Alliance is reviving President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper program to give young men of color more opportunities and improve their prospects in life. The leader talks about what it will take to ensure that the program succeeds in its mission.

In Hayward, Wisconsin, a unique community showed off its ability to move floating bogs recently. A 2-acre bog with 30-foot Tamarack trees had blocked waterways on Lake Chippewa Flowage near Hayward last month. To clear the way for boaters, a group of “bog pushers” used their boats to move the bog with precision. One of them explains the process involved in moving these floating structures with care and accuracy.

Hosts Rob Ferrett and Kate Archer Kent are joined by guests Dr. Stephen Hargarten, Dr. Megan Schultz, Walter Lanier, and Cheryl Treland in this episode of “Wisconsin Now.” Executive producer Dean Knetter and producers Tim Peterson, Royce Podeszwa, Beatrice Lawrence, and Mackenzie Krumme worked together to create this episode. Technical direction was provided by Tyler Ditter, Sarah Hopefl, and Lee Rayburn. Wisconsin Public Radio owns the copyright for this episode produced in 2024 by the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Educational Communications Board
