Windsor Shuts Down Windsor Lake Indefinitely Due to Harmful Algae Bloom: What You Need to Know

The Town of Windsor has decided to close access to Windsor Lake indefinitely after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed the existence of harmful algae blooms. This means that recreational activities such as tubing and water skiing on the lake will be prohibited starting July 3rd. However, annual motorized permit holders can still use the lake, while non-motorized boaters can do so at their own risk, although it is highly advised that they stay out of the water. Additionally, the Town of Windsor’s Fourth of July celebrations at Boardwalk Park will go on as planned, but the swim beach, dog park, and watercraft rentals will be unavailable.

The decision to shut down Windsor Lake was made after a recent test confirmed the presence of harmful algae blooms. Although there was hope that water quality would improve before the Fourth of July holiday based on previous test results, further testing led the town’s team to enforce the closure as a precautionary measure.

In May, the town installed four LG Sonic MPC-Buoys on Windsor Lake to combat harmful algae blooms. These buoys utilize ultrasonic waves to disrupt algae growth, preventing them from getting sunlight they need to thrive. This initiative was part of the town’s ongoing efforts to address harmful algae blooms in its lake.
