Voice Cloning Scams on the Rise in Myrtle Beach: How to Protect Yourself from This Advanced Scam

Voice cloning scams are on the rise in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with thieves using advanced technology to manipulate voice recordings and trick people out of their money. This AI-powered scam has already cost thousands of individuals millions of dollars, and it’s crucial for consumers to be aware of how it works.

According to Nicole Cordero of BBB Eastern Carolinas, scammers only need a three-second clip of a person’s voice to create a clone. These clips can easily be found on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram. By cloning someone’s voice, scammers can sound like someone you know and create a sense of urgency that tricks you into sending them money.

Paul Cerkez, a computer science professor at Coastal Carolina University, explains how voice cloning works. By creating a clone database of a person’s voice, scammers can generate sentences in that person’s voice from just text. This allows them to sound convincing and manipulate victims into sending money.

Imposter scams have become increasingly prevalent, with consumers losing a record $10 billion in 2023. Most scammers ask for money through wire transfers, Venmo, or Cash App. To protect yourself from falling victim to these types of scams, the BBB advises against acting immediately when someone asks you for money. Instead, take the time to verify their identity and do not send money until you are sure it is legitimate.

It’s essential to be cautious when receiving unsolicited requests for money or personal information. If you receive such requests via email or phone call, always double-check the sender’s identity before sending any funds or sensitive data.

In conclusion, voice cloning scams are becoming more common and can have devastating consequences for victims. It is crucial for consumers to be aware of how these types of scams work and take steps to protect themselves from falling victim to them.
