EU leaders reach consensus to renew Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission

Ursula von der Leyen has been reappointed as head of the European Commission by European leaders, with key EU posts being redistributed. Her reappointment will be confirmed by a vote in mid-July. The European Parliament has undergone changes following the strong showing of the extreme right in the June elections, making the outcome of the vote uncertain.

Kaja Kallas has been chosen to lead EU diplomacy in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine, succeeding Josep Borrell. António Costa has been appointed as the new president of the European Council, replacing Charles Michel on December 1. These appointments were made after an agreement among European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz.

Some leaders, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have criticized the decision, calling it a “shameful” arrangement. The upcoming legislative elections in France are also casting a shadow on the EU, with the National Rally leading the polls. Thierry Breton has been announced as the French member of the European Commission.

The strategic agenda for the next five years was endorsed by European leaders during their meeting last week. Key positions within EU institutions will be decided through upcoming votes, including that of the head of the European Parliament.

Despite some criticism from certain leaders and political parties, these appointments mark another step towards ensuring stability and continuity in EU leadership during a crucial period for Europe’s future development and growth.
