Unlicensed Injectors Spark Concerns Over Counterfeit Botox as 22 Cases Result in Serious Illness

On Tuesday, health officials in the US expressed concern over counterfeit Botox injections that have resulted in illness among 22 individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed these cases to the administration of injections by unlicensed or untrained individuals in unofficial settings such as homes or spas. This warning was issued after six people were treated for suspected botulism, a serious illness caused by botulinum toxin that can lead to symptoms such as double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and breathing problems.

According to the CDC, half of those affected have been hospitalized, prompting healthcare professionals to take notice of this growing concern. The cases began surfacing in early November and were reported across 11 states. To prevent further incidents like these from occurring, the CDC urged healthcare providers to only administer Botox injections from licensed professionals and advised patients to report any suspicious products they encounter.
