Patrick Cantlay’s participation in British Open uncertain after withdrawing from John Deere Classic due to injury

The sudden injury sustained by Patrick Cantlay while training for the John Deere Classic has put his participation in the tournament in doubt. Although he did not disclose the nature of his injury, it is unfortunate timing as he was set to make his debut at this week’s event.

Despite not winning since the 2022 BMW Championship, Cantlay has had four top-10 finishes this season and had only missed one cut in 15 starts prior to his injury. The injury will likely prevent him from competing until the British Open at Royal Troon on July 18.

While Cantlay is not listed in the field for the Genesis Scottish Open next week, the unexpected break should give him ample time to recover. Although an absence from competition is not an ideal preparation for a major championship, it may ultimately benefit his health and performance in the long run.

Jordan Spieth headlines the field at this week’s John Deere Classic, looking to secure a spot at Royal Troon with a top two finish. As a past champion of the event, Spieth knows what it takes to succeed in this format and will be eager to prove himself once again. The absence of Cantlay opens up an opportunity for other players to seize their chance for a berth at Royal Troon.
