Teenagers have a distinct body odor that is different from that of younger children, and this has been observed by parents. While babies have a characteristic baby smell, primary school children do not have a noticeable odor. However, teenagers emit a new type of smell that may be caused by increased activity of sebaceous glands and sweat glands during this period.
Research has shown that volatile steroids are present in the armpits of teenagers but not in younger children, affecting the smell of underarm sweat. In addition, certain compounds with violet and soap scents were found in younger children but not in teenagers, while compounds with waxy and goat-like scents were present in teenagers.
The study did not specify whether all individuals in each age group exhibited the same compounds in their armpits. However, it does shed light on the chemical changes that contribute to the distinct body odor associated with adolescence. It is important to note that body odor can also be influenced by factors such as diet and hygiene habits.
