Ukrainian forces are facing a constant barrage of attacks from Russian troops, which has taken a toll on their physical and psychological well-being. Despite Russia’s advantage in manpower, the Ukrainian soldiers continue to defend their territory with resilience.
The tactics employed by Russia near Kharkiv have been described as brutal, with troops referring to the waves of Russian attacks as “meat assaults.” Lieutenant Colonel Anton Bayev of the Khartia Brigade of Ukraine’s National Guard explained that these units are used to identify where Ukrainian firing equipment is located and wear down Ukrainian units.
Russian casualties have been substantial, with reports of “meat assault” tactics being implemented in attacks on Ukrainian cities. The ruthless approach taken by Russian commanders, which includes leaving their dead and wounded on the battlefield, has drawn criticism even from within Russia. UK military intelligence reported a spike in Russian injuries and deaths in May, with Russia losing around 1,200 troops daily.
Despite the significant losses suffered by Russia, the country has managed to replenish its troop numbers through various means such as offering lucrative military contracts, drafting prisoners, and utilizing foreign mercenaries. The increase in casualties came as Russia intensified its attacks on Kharkiv, taking advantage of delays in Western aid reaching Ukraine’s front lines.
