Sewell announces federal funding to bolster maternal health services

Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, will host two press conferences to announce a total of $9.2 million in federal funding that she helped secure for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing and the Bessemer Police Department.

At 10 a.m. CST, Rep. Sewell will be joined by the Dean of the UAB School of Nursing and the Director of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) of Central Alabama to present a check for $8.8 million over a five-year period from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Integrated Maternal Health Services Program. With this funding, the UAB School of Nursing will partner with the NFP of Central Alabama to increase access to maternity care for underserved communities in Alabama.

At 1:45 p.m. CST, Rep. Sewell will be joined by the City of Bessemer and the Bessemer Police Department to present a check for $406,200 from the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. The funding will be used by the Bessemer Police Department in collaboration with mental health professionals to implement co-response teams (CRT), which aim to help individuals experiencing a mental health crisis access proper services and avoid negative interactions with law enforcement.
