Kelvin Kiptum, holder of marathon world record, killed in road accident

Tragically, Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder for the men’s marathon, passed away at the age of 24 following a road accident in Kenya. His coach Garvais Hakizimana also lost his life in the same incident, which occurred in the Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet road.

Kiptum was known for his incredible achievements in athletics, including winning the London Marathon and breaking Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the Chicago Marathon just last year. He was scheduled to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon in April of this year.

The loss of such a talented athlete was widely mourned as an incredible tragedy to the athletic community and the Kenyan nation. World Athletics president Seb Coe, Kenyan police commander Peter Mulinge, and former Kenyan Prime Minister all expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Kiptum.
