The USA Hockey team is set to make a comeback at the world championships with an impressive roster that includes several NHL All-Stars. Led by Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk, the team will feature players such as Johnny Gaudreau, Seth Jones, Dylan Larkin, and Zach Werenski. Luke Hughes, a 20-year-old defenseman for the New Jersey Devils, is the youngest player on the roster. This roster has the most All-Stars for a U.S. team since 2019.
However, despite the star power of the roster, many top NHL players are currently competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs or taking a break after a long regular season. Auston Matthews, Quinn Hughes, and Connor Hellebuyck are among those who will not be participating in the tournament. The U.S. worlds team typically consists of 23 players, with additional players expected to be added closer to the start of the tournament in Czechia on May 10th. The team will be coached by John Hynes, who also serves as head coach for Minnesota Wild.
The U.S. team has had recent success at world championships, finishing fourth in the last two years and making it to the semifinals twelve times since 1992’s introduction of a bracketed playoff round. Their best finish during this period was third place (six bronze medals). Their last silver medal at worlds came in 1950 while their lone gold medal came at a standalone worlds event in 1933
