Yankees acquire INF Jon Berti from Marlins following DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury

In 2023, Jon Berti had a standout season with the Miami Marlins and is now a member of the New York Yankees. The team quickly addressed the absence of DJ LeMahieu due to injury by acquiring Berti from the Marlins. This move came shortly after it was announced that LeMahieu would start the season on the injured list with a bruised foot. The trade involved a three-team agreement that included the Yankees sending outfield prospect John Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Yankees received Jon Berti while the Rays acquired outfield prospect Shane Sasaki.

Berti’s batting average of .294, on-base percentage of .344, and slugging percentage of .405 earned him a career-best 103 OPS+. He played five different positions with the majority of his time spent at shortstop and third base. Berti was considered an above-average fielder at both positions based on stats like outs above average and defensive runs saved.

With the Yankees, Berti is expected to primarily play at third base, a position previously held by LeMahieu. The other infield positions are fairly set with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base. Although Oswaldo Cabrera was initially considered for third base, he will likely serve as a backup. While Berti has experience in the outfield, the Yankees already have a strong lineup with players like Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham.
