Collaborative efforts ignite passion for science

The Sara Harp Minter Elementary Science Olympiad team has been receiving support from mentors at Whitewater High School for the past three years. These mentors, who are members of Whitewater High’s Science National Honor Society, have been volunteering to help the Mountain Lions enhance their science skills and prepare for competitions.

On Friday mornings, the mentors visit the Minter students, bringing hands-on activities and games to help them understand and strengthen their knowledge for the county competition. The mentors not only help the students prepare for competitions but also support them during big events. They are passionate about science, as evidenced by their involvement with the Whitewater STEAM bus.

The shared passion for science has led some students to continue competing in Science Olympiad even in middle school. Stacy McClanahan, an enrichment teacher at Minter, Kristi Soong, a 1st-grade teacher at Minter, Kathryn Dupree and Shelley Kozlowski, both Whitewater High science teachers work together to facilitate this collaboration between the students. Their goal is to inspire a love for science and build relationships within the Whitewater community. The mentors from Whitewater High demonstrate a strong desire to develop relationships and mentor the Mountain Lions, for which Minter is grateful.
