The Addictive Nature of Social Media and its Impact on Mental Health: Why Warning Labels are Essential

In recent years, there has been a growing call for social media platforms to include warning labels about the potential risks to mental health, particularly for young users under the age of 18. The U.S. Surgeon General has advocated for disclosure of these risks, which can range from depression to impacting the nervous system and resulting in a disconnect between teenagers and their surroundings.

WSBT 22’s Kyland Hall spoke with neuroscience experts about the addictive nature of social media and how this addiction can contribute to anxiety and distorted perceptions. Dr. Ambreen Ghori, a Bowen Center Psychiatrist, explained how dopamine, a feel-good hormone, is released when engaging in pleasurable activities, leading to a desire for more of such experiences. However, for individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions such as depression, platforms like social media can exacerbate cognitive distortions and amplify negative perceptions of the world, heightening symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Nancy Michael, the Director of Neuroscience and Behavior at Notre Dame, emphasized the importance of recognizing that the brain takes 27 years to fully develop during which social media can negatively impact cognitive development. She highlighted the risks associated with habitual use and how these platforms can interfere with normal growth and functioning of the nervous system ultimately affecting cognitive development. Many students are observed to make extreme choices related to social media either by completely disengaging or succumbing to its addictive nature leading to sleep deprivation and negative impacts on mental health.

Given these concerns it is crucial for lawmakers to consider implementing warning labels on social media platforms and increasing awareness about the potential risks associated with their use. By doing so steps can be taken to mitigate negative effects and promote healthier digital habits among individuals of all ages.
