Terror Threats Loom Over T20 World Cup in Caribbean and North Pakistan: Safety Measures Put in Place

The T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from June 2 to 29, will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. However, a terror threat from North Pakistan has raised concerns about the safety of the event. According to reports on Cricbuzz, Pro-Islamic State (IS) media sources are urging violence against sporting events. The report also highlighted messages from the Afghanistan-Pakistan branch of ISKhorasan (IS-K), prompting supporters to engage in attacks in various countries.

Despite these concerns, Cricket West Indies (CWI) CEO Jonny Graves has reassured stakeholders that all necessary safety measures are in place. He emphasized the cooperation with host countries and cities and continuous monitoring of global security conditions. Graves stressed that safety and security are top priorities for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with a comprehensive security plan in place.

Media reports in the Caribbean have also addressed these threats, with Trinidad Prime Minister Keith Rowley acknowledging the readiness of security agencies to address any potential risks to the matches. Barbados regional security officials are actively monitoring for potential threats to the ICC event. Intelligence from Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) through media group ‘Nashir Pakistan’ has indicated a possible threat to the World Cup.

The matches will take place on islands such as Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago during the T20 World Cup. Officials are working diligently to ensure that all participants and spectators are safe during this tournament despite these concerns about security.
