Hurricane Beryl strands India’s T20 World Cup cricket champions, finally flying home

The India T20 World Cup-winning cricket team is currently stranded in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, a powerful storm that hit the Caribbean. The team, who defeated South Africa 7-6 to win the tournament, has been unable to leave the island since the international airport suspended operations as the storm approached.

The Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that efforts were being made to facilitate the departure of those stranded on the island in the next six to twelve hours, with the airport set to open on Tuesday. Hurricane Beryl, a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that hit Barbados with full force, caused widespread damage and resulted in one confirmed death.

Despite being stranded during a natural disaster, the Indian cricket team’s victory in the T20 World Cup marked a significant achievement after a year of heartbreak in other cricket tournaments. The National Hurricane Center reported that Hurricane Beryl had winds of 165 miles per hour and was expected to hit Jamaica on Wednesday, prompting disaster response measures.
