SCICON: A Nature-Driven School Teaching Science and Conservation to the Future Generations

SCICON, a unique outdoor school situated in the foothills of Tulare County, California, is on a mission to teach students about science and conservation. Operated by the Tulare Office of Education, the school welcomes over 8,000 fifth and sixth graders each year. According to its director, Dianne Shew, SCICON is a magical place where children can learn about nature and develop respect for themselves and others.

Covering 1,170 acres and surrounded by National Forest land, SCICON offers students an array of opportunities to explore the outdoors. They can embark on hikes of varying difficulty levels or attend lessons on aquatic life. Additionally, they can visit a museum that showcases local flora and fauna. One student, Gavin, appreciates the fresh mountain air and understands how human actions impact the environment.

In early 2023, SCICON faced severe flooding caused by historic rains in California. The flooding endangered fragile salamander habitats prompting the Friends of SCICON organization to receive a grant from Disney Conservation Fund. Disney’s “VoluntEARS” joined forces with the organization to clear debris left behind by the flooding as part of habitat restoration efforts. The grant will help restore salamander habitats while educating students about conservation efforts.

Dianne Shew believes that instilling an appreciation for nature in children is crucial for future generations’ well-being. By encouraging small daily actions to protect our planet’s earthly resources, she hopes that SCICON will make a positive impact on it.

Disney supports SCICON’s conservation efforts and believes that every individual has a role in preserving our only earthly home. As such, Disney continues to support educational programs like SCICON through grants and volunteer initiatives that promote environmental stewardship among young minds.

In conclusion, SCICON plays a vital role in teaching children about science and conservation while providing them with opportunities to explore nature firsthand. The school’s commitment to environmental education will undoubtedly benefit future generations who are passionate about preserving our planet’s natural resources for generations to come.
