Drowning Cases in Israel Surge by 46%

As the bathing season reaches its peak, drowning cases are on the rise in Israel. Last weekend, four men drowned in the Dead Sea, and a 50-year-old man drowned on the beach of Ashkelon National Park. These are just a few examples of the recent increase in drowning cases in Israel.

According to MDA data, since the beginning of the season, 166 people and children have drowned in Israel, with 20 people losing their lives. This marks a 46% increase in drownings compared to the same period last year. The majority of drownings have occurred on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in pools and water reservoirs.

Doral Erzuan, a senior paramedic at MDA, attributes this increase to factors such as unannounced beaches, lack of supervision, and distractions like alcohol or phones. Children are particularly vulnerable to drowning, especially those who do not know how to swim. Erzuan warns that even adults can drown if they do not take proper precautions.

Orly Silvinger, CEO of Betram organization for child safety emphasizes the importance of water safety for children. She highlights the need for constant supervision and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent accidents. Silvinger urges parents to be vigilant and follow safety protocols when children are in or near water.

In case of emergency situation Erzuan advises immediate action by calling 101 for assistance. He warns against attempting rescue if not properly trained as it can lead to further accidents. Erzuan stresses importance staying safe and following lifeguard instructions while swimming to prevent drowning incidents.

It is crucial for everyone to take responsibility for their own safety while enjoying water activities during this peak bathing season
