New research has shown that Vietnam experienced a significant increase in hospitalizations related to e-cigarette and heated tobacco use in 2023, with many of the patients being minors. This information was shared by Mr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, during an information session organized by the Ministry of Health on May 3. In fact, the number of hospitalizations was much higher compared to the same period in 2022, with 27 children under 16 years old and 44 cases in the 16-18 year age group among the patients.
A recent investigation into tobacco use in 11 provinces and cities found a rise in e-cigarette use among young people, particularly among students aged 13-17. The rate of e-cigarette use among this age group increased from 2.6% in 2019 to 8.1% in 2023, with rates for both genders nearly doubling over this time period. The Ministry of Health is now advocating for a ban on electronic cigarettes, heated cigarettes, and other new tobacco products in Vietnam due to their adverse health effects.
The primary ingredient in e-cigarettes, nicotine, is highly addictive and can impact brain development, especially in adolescents. Nicotine can also cause fetal damage if it reaches pregnant women or infants through secondhand smoke or other sources. Cigarette smoke contains carcinogens that heighten the risk of heart failure, stroke, immunodeficiency, and lowered resistance. Overdosing on nicotine can result in poisoning or even death from organ failure or cardiac arrests.
E-cigarettes containing flavorings that create fragrances may lead to poisoning or irritation if consumed incorrectly or mixed with other substances like alcohol or drugs. Countries around the world have implemented bans on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products due to their adverse health effects. The Ministry is currently working on amendments to the Law on Tobacco Control to address these regulations effectively.
It’s important for individuals who use e-cigarettes or heated tobacco products to understand the risks associated with these products and seek help if they need it before it’s too late.
In conclusion, Vietnam has experienced a significant increase in hospitalizations related to e-cigarette and heated tobacco use due to their adverse health effects. The Ministry of Health is advocating for a ban on electronic cigarettes, heated cigarettes, and other new tobacco products due to their harmful effects on human health.
It’s crucial that individuals understand the dangers associated with these products before using them regularly as they pose significant harm not only physically but also mentally if consumed recklessly or mixed with other substances like drugs or alcohol.
