Tesla has announced a major update to its Phone Key feature for iPhone users, which now incorporates Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. This update is outlined in the latest software version 2024.2.3 and promises to improve the accuracy of communication between vehicles and iPhones, resulting in more responsive locking, unlocking, and automatic door operations.
To access the update, Tesla advises users to upgrade their Phone Key via the Tesla app by switching from Bluetooth to UWB connectivity. The upgrade requires an iPhone 11 or later model with UWB as well as the latest Tesla app version 4.29.5 or higher.
While this feature is currently available for select models such as the latest Model 3, 2023 Model X, and Cybertruck, it is not yet accessible for refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with UWB frequencies in their certificates of conformity. Additionally, this update only benefits iPhone users as some Android devices equipped with UWB are not supported.
Tesla’s adoption of UWB technology underscores its commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to enhance user experience specifically catering to the significant number of iPhone users among Tesla owners. While this move does not extend to integrating Apple’s Car Key feature in Apple Wallet, it still represents a notable improvement in convenience and security for vehicle access.
This update paves the way for further collaborations between automotive and smartphone technologies to improve functionality and user experiences.
