On July 18th, Nintendo is celebrating the World Championships: NES Edition. This global competition, held on the Nintendo Switch, will allow players from around the world to test their skills in an online format and compete for a place on the global leaderboard.
The event pays homage to the in-person Nintendo World Championships that were held in 1990, 2015, and 2017. Participants will compete in over 150 small challenges based on classic NES games such as Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, Metroid, Super Mario Bros., and others.
Players are encouraged to practice by breaking their own records in single-player mode (Speedrun) before moving on to compete locally in Party mode. Subscription to Nintendo Switch Online will grant access to the World Championship mode where players can compete in five rotating challenges each week to try and secure a place on the global leaderboard.
In addition to the standard edition of the competition, a Deluxe edition will also be available on July 18th. The Deluxe edition features a physical version of the title, collectible pins, illustrated cards, and a replica of the golden NES ‘game pak’.
The Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition promises to be an exciting and nostalgic event for fans of classic Nintendo games to showcase their skills and compete on a global level.
