The matchup between Samoa Joe and MJF for the AEW World Title has been in the works for some time now. This plan was already in motion before CM Punk’s release, which occurred after his altercation with Jack Perry at the All In pay-per-view.
According to a report from Fightful Select, it appears that Joe’s storyline with Punk’s ‘Real World Championship’ was not the only title storyline in the works. There were plans for Joe to face MJF, indicating that there were no immediate plans for a feud between MJF and CM Punk. This means that fans who believed Joe was simply a replacement for Punk in the title match against MJF were mistaken.
The feud between Joe and MJF began at All Out when Joe intentionally bumped into MJF as they crossed paths near the ring. This led to MJF becoming upset and attacking Joe until security and Adam Cole intervened. Later, during an episode of “AEW Dynamite” on September 13, Joe choked out MJF’s tag team partner shortly after defeating Roderick Strong in the Grand Slam tournament finals.
On the September 20 episode of “Dynamite,” which is the Grand Slam special event, Joe will finally have his shot at the AEW World Championship. This event is set to take place at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and will also feature matches such as Jon Moxley defending the AEW International Title against Rey Fenix, Saraya defending the AEW Women’s Title against Toni Storm, and a winner-takes-all match between ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli and NJPW Strong Openweight Eddie Kingston.
