Red Yeast Rice Supplement Deaths: 76 Additional Victims Linked to Kobayashi Corporation’s ‘beni-koji cholesterol help’

The investigation into the deaths linked to Kobayashi Corporation’s red yeast rice supplements, sold under the trade name “beni-koji cholesterol help,” is ongoing. Initially, the company reported 5 deaths related to the use of this product, but later revised the number to 4 deaths, with one person not having used the supplement. All of the deaths were attributed to impaired kidney function, with a majority of the victims being between the ages of 40 and 69, and around two-thirds of them being women.

However, new information has emerged with the discovery of additional 76 deaths linked to these supplements. The Ministry of Health has stated that it will continue to investigate these incidents and families of the deceased individuals have been in contact with Kobayashi Corporation for further analysis. Health Minister Keizo Takemi criticized Kobayashi Corporation for being slow in reporting these incidents and announced that the ministry will directly manage this investigation into these deaths.

The company has suggested that these deaths may have been caused by chemicals produced during the processing of red yeast rice. They found puberulic acid, a natural compound derived from blue mold, in their ingredients used in their supplements. The Ministry has received numerous inquiries about this issue and has set up a government hotline to address concerns. Additionally, they emphasized that these products have not been licensed for circulation in Vietnam and urged people not to buy them through social networks or carry them by hand.

The situation surrounding these deaths continues to unfold as investigations are ongoing and efforts are made to ensure consumer safety.
