The UN Security Council approves resolution urging “urgent” ceasefire in Gaza

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution promoting an “immediate” ceasefire during the month of Ramadan in Gaza. More than 32,300 people have died as a result of the Israeli Army’s military offensive on the Palestinian enclave. The resolution was approved with 14 votes in favor, one abstention from the United States, and no votes against.

UN Secretary General António Guterres announced the resolution on social media, urging for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages. The Algerian ambassador to the UN praised the Council for fulfilling its responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

The United States representative at the UN expressed support for the resolution’s objectives and urged all member states to pressure Hamas to accept the agreement for a ceasefire. The resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan, the release of hostages held by Hamas, humanitarian access for medical needs in Gaza, and protection of civilians.
