After a gunman opened fire in the lobby of Lakewood Church, leading to a shootout between the suspect and law enforcement, Houston Police Department (HPD) officers have been provided with mental health care. This comes after the HPD officer involved in the shooting, as well as responding officers, were shot and killed by Genesse Ivonne Moreno.
The HPD officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing. In addition, the union has reached out to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to offer mental health resources to their officer involved in the shooting. Both officers have been given access to peer support teams from their respective departments and unions, as well as any necessary psychological treatment.
It is crucial for law enforcement leaders to provide mental health care for officers involved in traumatic and high-stress situations like this one. The mental health and well-being of officers are just as important as their physical safety. Providing resources and support for officers will help them recover from such incidents and continue serving their communities effectively.
