Princeton Fencers Shine at Junior World Championships: Brooke Wins Silver and Nazlymov Finishes 15th in Saber Competition

Just under a month ago, Princeton freshman Alec Brooke won a silver medal in épée at the Junior World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on April 15th. In an impressive field of over 200 fencers, Brooke finished as the runner-up, demonstrating his exceptional skills and talent.

During the pool rounds, Brooke had a record of 5-1 and was ranked 25th. However, he quickly moved up through the elimination bracket, winning six consecutive bouts to make it to the final. Along the way, he defeated opponents such as Doruk Erolcevik from Turkey and Tristan Lumineau from Britain. In the closely contested final against Alban Aebersold from Switzerland, Brooke fell just short with a score of 15-14.

Brooke’s standout performance at the NCAA championships was not limited to his individual success. His fellow Princeton teammate, Tatiana Nazlymov also put on an impressive showing at the Junior World Championships. In the women’s saber competition, she finished 15th out of 132 fencers with a record of 4-2 in the pool rounds.

Nazlymov continued her outstanding performance throughout the competition and made it to the round of 16 where she faced off against Alexandra Kuvaeva from Georgia and was eliminated with a score of 15-12. Despite this setback, Nazlymov had victories over fencers from Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria throughout the competition.
